Provide effective feedback

Sharing your satisfaction or your reasons for dissatisfaction is critical to keep people motivated and guide their efforts. The desired results are not always forthcoming, however. How to express feedback in a way that is both relevant and constructive?

01

Be clear and measured

  • Give precise and concrete feedback, e.g. Cite the facts, use precise terms, and be complete.

  • Be frank, e.g. Avoid euphemisms and excessive compliments to retain your credibility.

02

Make sure your feedback is helpful

  • Direct feedback toward the future, e.g. Give advice to help people make progress and underline their strengths.

  • Encourage people to participate in a two-way exchange, to help them—and even you—to understand the situation better.
