Motivation is a critical component of performance, but naturally has its highs and lows. What can you do to stimulate motivation from day to day?
Set motivating goals
-
Propose challenges that are both stimulating and realistic.
-
Adapt assignments to individual aspirations, e.g. the desire for challenges, social interaction, etc.
-
Provide support to help people reach their objectives: offer your help, be encouraging, etc.
Cultivate well-being at work
-
Give meaning to people’s efforts, e.g. Show how their work contributes to the company’s success.
-
Instill a pleasant work environment, e.g. Organize times for people to socialize, foster optimism even after a setback, etc.
Recognize the work accomplished
-
Thank people for efforts deployed, and not just results. You will thus maintain the desire to make progress.
-
Show your recognition with development opportunities (training, new projects, etc.)
-
Celebrate team successes.
Take action
Practice formulating motivating objectives (10 min)
A motivating objective is one that is worth reaching, and one that can be attained.
-
When setting a new objective for one of your team members, aim for a certain level of difficulty in order to make it stimulating: it must be a challenge, therefore requiring a certain effort… yet it must remain achievable!
-
Be sure you raise the level of difficulty if the objective seems too easy or break down the task or highlight the resources available, if it seems too hard.
-
Be specific and pragmatic when formulating the objective to facilitate its execution (E.g.: clearly formulate the expectations, set a deadline, etc.)
Ensure you regularly express your satisfaction (15 min)
Highlighting successes will stimulate your staff’s appetite for progress by relying on their strengths.
Set yourself the objective of identifying one good reason to congratulate each of your subordinates at least once in the coming week. Your compliments have to be justified, reasonable and expressed without delay.
Ask yourself each time: how can I formulate my congratulations in a way that aids progress?
